For the last four years, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez played a starring role in the Democrat Party.
That no longer may be the case.
And now Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez received tragic news about her future in Congress.
Democrats unanimously elected New York Congressman Hakeem Jeffries as the new Minority Leader to replace Nancy Pelosi.
Jeffries immediately set about sending a message that Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow “Squad” members would not be calling the shots in the Democrat caucus.
“Everybody matters,” Jeffries stated.
Jeffries then name checked the various factions in the Democrat Party, including the Blue Dog Coalition, the New Democrats, and the Progressive Caucus, as all having a say in how the now toothless House minority would function.
“That’s what makes the House Democratic Caucus the most authentic representatives of the American people,” Jeffries told reporters. “Sometimes we can have noisy conversations, but as we show time and time again, on issue after issue after issue, at the end of the day we always come together, find the highest common denominator and get big things done for everyday Americans.”
For her part, Ocasio-Cortez expressed a wait and see attitude towards Jeffries.
Ocasio-Cortez said “it remains to be seen” if the “Squad” will view Jeffries as an ally or an impediment toward their goal of turning America into a socialist nation.
“It’s going to be on the caucus’ now-nominated leader to determine what his stance toward progressives will be,” Ocasio-Cortez added.
After Ocasio-Cortez won her election in 2018, there were reports that she sought a Primary challenger to run against Jeffries.
But Ocasio-Cortez and her allies failed to recruit a candidate to run against him.
Many Democrats – even those on the socialist Left – would love to see Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and their allies receive less visibility in Congress.
Ocasio-Cortez defining the Democrat Party to the public is bad news for the Left, as her version of woke socialism is not popular with voters.
But because of Ocasio-Cortez’s ability to generate headlines with her massive social media presence, there is little Democrats can do to tamp down the “Squad’s” ability to dominate the conversation on the Left.
Jeffries made an effort to show he can rein in the “Squad” during his introductory press conference by putting them on equal footing with the other factions in the Democrat Party.
It remains to be seen if this strategy will pay off politically for Democrats.
