Ever since Head Football coach Dabo Swinney took over in 2011, Clemson University has reigned supreme as a college football powerhouse, winning 8 ACC titles and 2 National Championships.

However, this year’s season is a completely different story, causing many to wonder what is going on in Clemson, South Carolina.

But jaws hit the floor after Coach Dabo Swinney tore this smart aleck a new one.

Dabo Swinney has had enough of his vocal “what have you done for me lately” style critics

College football, more than any other sport, has a “what have you done for me lately” attitude.

For example, Clemson University has reigned supreme in the NCAA for the last decade, with only the University of Alabama posing as a legitimate threat to its supremacy.

But after a terrible start to this year’s season, many fans are chiming in and wondering what has gone wrong for the typically dominant Clemson Tigers.

Following last Saturday’s embarrassing 24-17 loss to the North Carolina State Wolfpack, Dabo Swinney appeared on the Tiger Calls radio show on Monday to speak to fans about his plan moving forward.

One unhappy fan phoned in and asked the disgruntled coach, “so, I’m curious, why are we paying you $11.5 million to go 4-4?”

The fan was referring to Swinney’s contract that he agreed to last year, which lasts 10 years in exchange for a whopping $115 million.

Swinney replied to this snarky remark by saying that “you’re part of the problem, to be honest with you.  The appreciation, the expectation is greater than the appreciation.  And that’s the problem. We’ve won 12, 10-plus-win seasons in a row.  That’s happened three times in 150 years.”

“So if you want to know why, Clemson ain’t sniffed a national championship for 35 years,” he added. “We’ve won two in seven years. And there’s only two other teams that can say that – Georgia and Alabama. OK?   Is this a bad year? Ya, and it’s my responsibility. Take 100% responsibility for it. But all this bullcrap you’re thinking and all these narratives you read … Listen, man, you can have your opinion all you want. And you can apply for the job. And good luck to you.”

The controversy surrounding Swinney represents this generation’s razor-thin attention span

As coach Swinney pointed out on Tiger Talk last Monday, even the best of college football programs do not see great success every single year.

Winning National Championships takes patience, and most college football programs have not even come close to securing a National Title.

Moving forward, it seems highly unlikely that Clemson will accomplish much this year, aside from possibly qualifying for a minor Bowl Game, which means very little in college football.

However, Tiger fans should not be worried, as Clemson has all the pieces in place to achieve long-term success if they can get their hands on the right recruits.
