The raid of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate has led to some pretty surprising reactions.
Even many of Trump’s rivals are standing with him, regardless of their potential plans to run against him in 2024.
But not everyone sees things the same way.
More government overreach and more weaponization, some GOP members say
Conservative Governors like Glenn Youngkin, Kristi Noem, and Greg Abbott all say they’re “stunned” by the FBI raids of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago.
Ron DeSantis, who many consider a possible GOP Presidential frontrunner if Trump decides not to run, exclaimed that this is an example of using federal agencies to attack your political opponent.
Some are even comparing the raids to the infamous Watergate investigation of former President Richard Nixon.
And while Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence disagreed on several issues, even Pence tweeted that the raid “undermined public confidence” in the U.S. justice system.
Many people, including Trump’s political rivals, are asking why the raids were allowed to be carried out in the first place.
The bottom line is that allowing government agencies to do bidding against your opponent is a dangerous precedent.
More people, including many GOP activists, are rallying behind Donald Trump, which may lead to a new opportunity for him to try his hand at running in 2024.
This latest action by the U.S. government is drawing the ire of a range of people within the Republican Party, even those who may have “sworn off” Trump in the past.
Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina spoke to Trump and is convinced that the raid has only made his desire to run for President again even stronger.
So, who from the GOP is on the fence about the raids?
While you’d be hard-pressed to find someone from the GOP who actually supports the raids, some are taking a wait-and-see approach.
Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) claims that he prefers to let the whole thing “play out” first, but also conceded that it does raise some questions about political motivations.
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie claimed that searching Trump’s safe is “fair game,” especially when it comes to federal law enforcement.
But he was quick to add that getting the search warrant affidavit is vital since it contains verbiage about why they were sent to perform the search in the first place.
Christie also conceded that if no evidence is found, then the raid would be considered “unjust.”
Sometimes the line isn’t gray
Condemning the raid shouldn’t be that hard.
And some GOP members, like Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) took a much more hard-lined approach.
Hawley called for the resignation or impeachment of U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in an August 9 tweet.
Ultimately, the Mar-a-Lago FBI raid could unify the Republican Party and strengthen Trump’s chances for a successful run in the primary.
Many already view the raid as an egregious example of government overreach.
Some commentators have even already exclaimed that this raid will propel Trump into victory for the 2024 primary.
