For an incumbent Democrat who is supposedly sailing to re-election, her allies in the gun control lobby are dropping a sizable chunk of change to protect her.
But they aren’t just running ads on gun control, which makes this whole episode even more peculiar.
And one billionaire-backed gun control group is going all in to protect this vulnerable Democrat.
Bloomberg-backed Everytown for Gun Safety spending big on ads for Whitmer
The New York-based gun control group, Everytown for Gun Safety, announced it is committed to spending $2.3 million on ads in Michigan attacking Republican candidate for Governor Tudor Dixon in their effort to see their trusted ally Democrat Gretchen Whitmer re-elected.
Whitmer is an avowed enemy of the Second Amendment, having used her bully pulpit as Governor to call on the Michigan Legislature to pass so-called “Red Flag” gun confiscation laws, gun bans, government-mandated storage laws, and more.
During her time in the State Senate, she voted against ending Michigan’s “duty to retreat,” which effectively gave armed criminals more rights than law-abiding citizens who were forced to flee before they could defend themselves during a home invasion.
This legislation was supported by bipartisan supermajorities and signed by then Democrat Governor Jennifer Granholm, yet Whitmer was one of a handful of radical far-left Democrats to vote against this commonsense self-defense reform.
In 2020, Gretchen Whitmer said in an interview that she supported the “spirit” of the Defund the Police movement.
So she apparently wants fewer cops but also wants the victims of a home invasion to hide in a closet while waiting for the police to arrive.
Of course, she is now claiming that “Defund the Police” is a bad idea, perhaps yet another sign of trouble for a campaign that is supposedly in cruise control.
Gun control group attacking the Republican on . . . abortion?
In yet another blatant display of mission creep by left-wing groups, and further evidence that they are all just tentacles of the Leftist Leviathan, Everytown for Gun Safety is running ads attacking Tudor Dixon on abortion.
What in the world does that have to do with gun safety?
Absolutely nothing, but it reveals that Democrats realize that they can’t really win by attacking gun rights, especially in a state like Michigan.
Not only that, it also reveals that the Left is staking all of their hope on the abortion issue, just as Gretchen Whitmer has been hammering on the abortion issue ad nauseum on social media and in her campaign rhetoric.
She’s trying to hide the fact that she supports policies that have led to more violence in our communities and has aligned herself with organizations that want to dismantle police agencies in our most violent cities.
Whitmer is also on record making ridiculous statements about firearms, comparing the most commonly owned firearm in America, the AR-15, to “weapons of mass destruction.”
She and Joe Biden must be reading from the same talking points.
Republican Governors Assoc. spending in Michigan but is it too late?
Just recently the Republican Governors Association started running ads in Michigan, perhaps a sign that they are seeing potential in Tudor Dixon’s challenge against Whitmer.
Whitmer and her far-left allies have thus far massively outspent Dixon, but the polling is not showing an insurmountable lead for the Democrat.
The next few weeks will be telling.
If Tudor Dixon can actually finish strong and other outside conservative groups start pouring money into the Great Lakes State, there could be a shocking upset coming on November 8.
Right now it isn’t looking good, but crazier things have happened.
At least they are keeping it interesting.
