Tensions between the US and Russia have reached a fever pitch.
Pro-war politicians in both parties seem insistent on making it even worse.
And Russia’s foreign minister just issued a warning of the fallout that would come from this dangerous idea.
The U.S. is fighting a proxy war against Russia in Ukraine.
Already, the amount of money sent to Ukraine has exceeded our annual spending during our own war in Afghanistan.
As the war wages on, the chance that Russia will use nuclear weapons increases.
The threat of nuclear Armageddon is now at its highest point since the Cuban Missile Crisis.
And neocons in Congress are making things worse.
Throwing gasoline on the fire
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) who has spent his career in Congress pushing the U.S. into war, recently called for the assassination of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
For a member of the U.S. Senate to openly call for the assassination of a foreign head of state is extremely irresponsible and dangerous.
Graham’s statement drew rebuke from several of his Republican colleagues.
In response, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted, “We need leaders with calm minds & steady wisdom. Not blood thirsty warmongering politicians trying to tweet tough by demanding assassinations. Americans don’t want war.”
Allegedly, some within the Pentagon may be considering Graham’s foolish idea.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned of the consequences of the U.S. carrying out a “decapitation blow” against Vladimir Putin.
“Washington went the furthest. […] Some ‘unnamed officials’ from the Pentagon actually threatened to inflict a ‘decapitation blow’ on the Kremlin, but, in fact, it is a threat to physically eliminate the head of the Russian state,” he claimed.
“If such ideas are actually hatched by someone, this someone should think very carefully about the possible consequences of such plans,” Lavrov added.
Lavrov noted that it has become more apparent that the U.S. is engaged in a proxy war with Russia through the Ukraine conflict.
“It is no longer a secret to anyone that the strategic goal of the United States and its NATO allies is ‘victory over Russia on the battlefield’ as a mechanism for significantly weakening or even destroying our country,” he said.
He added, “For the sake of achieving this goal, our opponents are ready for a lot. The main beneficiary of the ‘hot conflict’ is the United States, which seeks to extract the maximum benefit from it, both in economic and military-strategic terms.”
Politicians who wish to escalate this conflict should realize that war with Russia is a no-win scenario.
Russia has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world and Putin has made it clear that he will use them if he feels threatened.
A hot war between the world’s biggest nuclear powers would likely end in the destruction of humanity.
We must pursue diplomatic solutions and tell dangerous neocons like Lindsey Graham to sit down and shut up.
