Union officials have historically wielded enormous power over American politics, particularly during the 20th century.
Much of their power has been diminished, forcing many union officials to put on a tough guy act in a desperate attempt to intimidate their enemies.Â
But this union boss couldn’t sleep after this eye-opening confrontation.
Sean O’Brien just met his match during this intense Senate hearing
Big Labor is on the rise, and leading the way is Teamsters Union Boss Sean O’Brien.Â
Sean O’Brien is popular among some of his members due to his hard hitting political tactics, often calling out elected officials who stand in his way by name.Â
Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma has particularly ticked off O’Brien, who ranted about the Senator earlier this year on X by calling him a “moron” among other insults.
O’Brien went on to tweet that “you know where to find me. Anyplace, Anytime cowboy.”
On Tuesday, at a hearing with the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Sean O’Brien testified on a number of issues facing his union.
On the Committee is none other than Senator Mullin, who used his time to respond to O’Brien’s threatening tweets.Â
Mullin, who was at one time an MMA fighter, told O’Brien that he “should stand his butt up” and that “if you want to run your mouth, we can be two consenting adults. We can finish it here.”
Senator Mullin then stood up and began to adjust his rings, prompting Senator Bernie Sanders to jump in and chastise him.
Sanders said that “this is a hearing, and God knows the American people have enough contempt for Congress, let’s not make it worse,” which seemed to ease tensions slightly for the time being.Â
Although things did not devolve into a physical altercation, Sean O’Brien later said in the hearing that, “you challenged me to a cage match, acting like a twelve year old schoolyard bully.”
Sanders criticized O’Brien by saying that “we were there to be talking about, and did talk about, the crisis facing working families in this country, the growing gap between the very rich and everybody else and the role that unions are playing in improving the standard of living of the American people.”
He added that “we’re not there to talk about cage fighting.”
This tense Senate exchange exposes the rampant division within American politics
American politics is more divided than at any other time in modern political history.Â
Big Labor’s recent re-emergence is partly to blame given the billions of dollars they often spend on politics.Â
Stirring up personal beef with elected officials like Mullin is an important part of their program to fund and elect Democrats all across the nation who will curry their political favor.Â
Despite the intense exchanges during the hearing, no words were exchanged following the meeting.
However, it is unclear what will come of this intense rivalry.Â
